We ended up camping at Cliff Head North out of necessity after we weren’t able to find space for our group at Sandy Cape and had a hankering for beachside camping. With Zena in tow, we were limited with where we could go and had chanced upon the rest area in previous trips north. Due to the proximity to the Indian Ocean Drive, you get some of the road noise at night from the passing cars. The novelty of camping next to the ocean made up for this. As we were with a large group, the free-form camping was perfect. We found the beach weedy and weren’t able to kayak as planned. The boys took to fishing instead. The trek to the toilet was onerous but the facilities have been upgraded since we last visited, making the site more attractive. There were a few other groups spread out but didn’t have any issues with late night revelers.
Dogs are allowed off-lead here, which is always a bonus. Zena loved playing on the beach, finding all of the stinky things. As you can see by the photos, she wasn’t too excited by the waves. While she was the only dog on the trip, she had lots of humans around who were more than happy to take her for walks and keep her entertained. We were surprised by a late night visit from a fox that raided our camp while we were sleeping, including helping themselves to my gluten free break… Zena definitely will never make a good guard dog.
- It’s a long drive from Perth – best if you can stay more than one night or as a stop further north
- Keep your food secured at night from foxes
- Come prepared for flies
